If your just starting out playing the guitar you should be prepared for a long time commitment. Learning guitar for beginners will not be accomplished in one day however with the right equipment and determination you can learn much faster.

If you are interested in playing rock guitar and dream of playing faster shredding solos you still need to learn the basics. Consider getting an electric guitar for rock guitar playing. Getting an acoustic guitar for beginners might be the way to go. With an acoustic guitar, you can still play rock and also folk music or if your a good lyric writer, do the singer songwriter thing.

The playability of an electric guitar may be appealing to you but hauling it and an amplifier around is a chore. Classical guitar really gets your finger style chops honed down. The off shoot of classical technique is that you can carry it over to folk music, rock and even jazz guitar. Sop you may want to focus on an acoustic guitar for a while.

Learn chords first and if your getting into rock I would suggest learning bar chords. They are a system of moveable chords played up and down the guitar neck. Start with some fundamental chords like G-A-D-C and E armed with these chords, you can play lots of tunes and then learn some minor chords as well. Practice shifting from one chord to another and tell yourself every detail about the chord , for example, playing a D chord you would tell yourself “my first finger goes on the 3rd string 2nd fret, my 2nd finger goes on the 1st string 2nd fret and my 3rd finger goes on the 2nd string 3rd fret”. Then play or strum the chord and listen to the sound of that chord. Do this for every chord in the beginning then try to move your fingers SIMULTANEOUSLY from one chord to another and not worry about strumming at this point. Once you feel comfortable with changing from one to another chord, add in a simple strum perhaps one strum per beat and try to keep time.

Let me talk about keeping time. One of the best investments in learning to play guitar for beginners is a metronome. You can find some free ones online. Set up a very slow tempo and plot out several chords and strum a 4 beat pattern (1 strum per click). And try to make the chord changes and keeping the time. You see timing is everything. Even if you can’t play a million chords, playing a few chords in time is the way to go. You can also get some online courses that will teach you some stgrum patterns.

Learn to read tabs. Among the best tips in learning the guitar fast and being able to play your preferred songs on the guitar is learning to read tabs or tablature. Nevertheless, there are also flaws in this system, it is however one of the better ways to learn the guitar fast and share music with guitarists. It may be too confusing to consider a guitar tab if it is your first time but when you get to understand its different notations, you will find out that it is easy to learn. Asking help with a friend who knows the way to read tabs can be a great way to learn the tabs easily.

Practice, practice and practice. The key to learning the guitar for beginners is building muscle memory that allows you to play a song even without looking recorded on your fingers. With a lot of practice, you can learn to try out your favorite songs right away.
